Achieving My Dream

Hello, my name is Santa Franco Ortega of Mexican nationality. I was born and raised in a small community with a population of 56 inhabitants. My siblings and I attended elementary school there, through the CONAFE program, unfortunately when we reached adolescence there was not much for us, the opportunities for work and education were too limited and my parents decided that we should move to the nearest town in search of a better future and opportunities.

In 1992, I met my husband while he was on vacation in the town where I lived. We got to know each other as friends for a while and from there a beautiful relationship was born and we ended up getting married in 1995. Within a week of celebrating our marriage, I immigrated to the United States of America on a tourist visa. A few months after my arrival, I applied for a green card. It took about 8 months to arrive. When I received the green card, I was so happy! It meant a lot to me to be able to be reunited with my family again.

However, I still had that restlessness to become an American citizen, a dream that I saw as a little complicated since my English was very poor. I never stopped preparing myself. I attended English classes offered in the community and several courses at Catholic Charities of Southern Colorado (CCSoCo) including educational, parenting, and citizenship classes. In 2009 I was close to my goal and felt well prepared to enter the citizenship application and take the test, but unexpected news came into my life which made me lose my focus a little.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer, so I had to pause that part of my life and get treatment. When everything passed, I went back to continue preparing for my citizenship test. I felt much stronger this time. I had the support of my children, which made a big difference with the preparation and motivation I needed to continue. Recently in 2019 When I heard about the New American Campaign project through CCSoCo, where they assist Green Card holders apply for Citizenship, I immediately contacted them. CCSoCo helped me submit my application to US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). I quickly received a response from USCIS, and I had a good experience throughout the process. When I was scheduled for the interview, I was studied the 100 civics (history and government) questions day and night, and I arrived at the appointment very nervous and excited at the same time. When I saw from the outside how attentive and respectful the staff were and how the applicants were treated, something told me that everything would go very well. When they gave me the news that I finally passed and achieved U.S. citizenship I did not know what to do with so much emotion. I could only say thank you very much and burst into tears. I thank God, and the people at Catholic Charities of Southern Colorado that supported me and motivated me to achieve this dream!

Hola, mi nombre es Santa Franco Ortega de nacionalidad mexicana. Nací y crecí en una pequeña comunidad con una población de 56 habitantes. Mis hermanos y yo cursamos la primaria ahí, a través del programa de CONAFE, desafortunadamente cuando llegamos a la adolescencia ya no había mucho para nosotros, las oportunidades de trabajo y educación eran demasiado limitadas y mis padres decidieron que debíamos mudarnos al pueblo más cercano en busca de un mejor futuro y oportunidades.

En 1992, conocí a mi esposo mientras estaba de vacaciones en el Pueblo donde yo vivía. Empezamos a conocernos como amigos por un tiempo, de ahí nació una bonita relación y acabamos casándonos en 1995. A la semana de celebrar nuestro matrimonio, emigre a los Estados Unidos de América con un visado de turista. Unos meses después de mi llegada solicité la tarjeta de residencia, esta tardó unos 8 meses en llegar. Cuando recibí la residencia me sentí feliz, significaba mucho para mí, "poder reunirme de nuevo con mi familia". Sin embargo, aún tenía esa inquietud de hacerme ciudadana americana, un sueño que veía un poco complicado, mi inglés era muy escaso. Sin embargo, nunca dejé de prepararme, asistí a clases de inglés que se ofrecían en la comunidad y a varios cursos en Caridades Católicas del Sur de Colorado; educativos, de crianza, de ciudadanía o aquellos para los que calificaba.

En el año de 2009 estaba cerca de mi meta y me sentía bien preparada para entrar la aplicación de ciudadanía y tomar el examen, ya que era más sencillo que el actual, pero llegaron noticias inesperadas a mi vida, que me hicieron perder un poco el equilibrio. Me diagnosticaron cáncer de seno, ahí tuve que hacer una pausa en mi vida y esperar. Pero cuando todo pasó, volví a seguir preparándome, me sentí mucho más fuerte, tenía el apoyo de mis hijos, los que hicieron una gran diferencia con la preparación y la motivación que necesitaba para continuar. Recientemente en el 2019 me enteré del proyecto (NAC) Campaña para Nuevos Americanos a través de CCSoCO, donde ayudan a residentes permanentes a solicitar la Ciudadanía, inmediatamente me puse en contacto con ellos. CCSoCo me ayudo a presentar mi solicitud al Servicio de Ciudadanía e Inmigración de Estados Unidos (USCIS). Recibí rápidamente una respuesta del USCIS y tuve una buena respuesta durante todo el proceso. Cuando me citaron para la entrevista estuve estudiando las 100 preguntas de civismo (historia y gobierno) día y noche, y aun así llegué a la cita muy nerviosa y emocionada a la vez. Al ver desde fuera el trato tan atento y respetuoso que recibían las personas que ahí estaban y salían, algo me dijo que todo iría muy bien. Cuando me dieron la noticia de este gran sueño ya conseguido no supe qué hacer con tanta emoción, sólo pude decir muchas gracias y rompí a llorar. Agradecí a Dios, a las personas y a la organización Caridades Católicas del Sur de Colorado que me apoyaron y motivaron para lograr este sueño.
