One of our very own Parents as Teachers (PAT) home visitors had the privilege of supporting two mothers on the beautiful and challenging journey of breastfeeding.
The home visitor met Miranda and Alicia, two new mothers, who despite being full of love and determination, were facing the initial challenges of starting breastfeeding. Miranda, with her three-week-old baby, was struggling with breastfeeding techniques and the constant worry of not producing enough milk. Alicia, on the other hand, was overwhelmed by the conflicting information and didn’t know where to start.

The home visitor's first step was to build a close connection with them, listening to their concerns and offering them a safe space to express their feelings. Through their conversations, she was able to better understand their needs and provide personalized support.
For Miranda, the home visitor organized a series of educational sessions on breastfeeding techniques and created a follow-up plan to ensure she felt more secure and comfortable. She provided practical advice and strategies to improve the baby’s latch, as well as techniques to stimulate milk production. Miranda's progress was remarkable: not only did her technique improve, but she also began to feel more confident in herself.
Alicia, on the other hand, needed emotional support as much as technical guidance. The home visitor walked her through the information on breastfeeding, breaking down the key concepts into simple, manageable steps. Together, they developed a plan to tackle the initial challenges and addressed her concerns with patience and empathy. As Alicia started to see the benefits of her efforts for her baby, her enthusiasm for breastfeeding began to grow.
This is just the beginning, and we know there will be more challenges and victories ahead. But what is certain is that with the mutual support and determination they have shown, Miranda and Alicia are well on their way to a successful and rewarding breastfeeding experience. The home visitor is excited to continue supporting them and seeing how they grow on their motherhood journey.
